Company: Cynthia Cohlmeyer Landscape Architect, Colhmeyer Architecture Limited Location: Regina, Saskatchewan Cynthia Cohlmeyer Landscape Architect and Cohlmeyer Architecture Limited worked three years with the City of Regina to complete consultation, planning, urban design, architecture and landscape services related to Regina City Square, a project called a “Big Move” in the Downtown Master Plan, and intended to enliven the City Centre. Reordering traffic, transit and cycling routes played a big role in our work. Our task was to re-envision 12th Avenue in downtown Regina as a public square and to provide long term plans for Victoria Park adjacent to it. Our City Square sews 12th Avenue, Victoria Park and the Scarth Street Mall together, expanding the pedestrian realm, and claiming 12th Avenue for public events. 12th Avenue now scoops into Victoria Park where bus stops and broad sidewalks used to be. This alerts drivers to a newly shared pedestrian environment, while it frames a new City Square. The Regina Folk Festival and many other events occur in City Square every summer. Monster lighting houses necessary technical support, and in winter skaters can sail under the lights on flooded paving. The pavement is a unique, German pre-cast material, installed in a broad, …
Bridgwater Forest
“Inspiring a Curiosity and Connectivity to Nature” Bridgwater Forest is the latest neighbourhood development located on 330 acres of land in Waverley West, Winnipeg. Bridgwater Forest embraces “Live Happier, Live Healthier, Live Greener” principles by providing 70 acres of open space that includes 25 acres of mature forest, 4 storm water management lakes, and an array of native plantings. Over five kilometers of trails link the community together and encourage a healthy “green” lifestyle. The trail system travels through the forest and along the lakes offering a variety of landscapes. A zero-excavation asphalt path detail was adapted for use to minimize ecological impact. As a result, the entire community can safely experience the more sensitive areas of the forest while viewing native flora and fauna in its habitat. Nodes are strategically integrated into the trail system to maximize outdoor experiences and to encourage social interaction. Recreational nodes include a playground with pavilion, pedestrian bridge, and fountain plaza that provide the neighbourhood with different active and passive recreational opportunities. Some nodes are located near transit bus stops and mailbox kiosks to further encourage and enhance outdoor community gathering points. The node designs serve as focal points within the trail system – …

Western Manitoba Cancer Care
Company: Architecture 49 Date: 2007-2012 Location: Brandon The Brandon Regional Hospital site provides full Radiation and Chemotherapy treatment for patients in Western Manitoba. Landscape Architect worked with the team to develop a site design and building form which provided a clean and light spatial environment integrating landscape with the interior. The shared areas like entrance and waiting form a strong linear element between two quadrants on either side, which was extended in the landscape by providing a healing courtyard garden. The healing courtyard garden provides an inviting outdoor area which is viewed and experienced throughout the seasons. Positioned central to the whole facility, both staff and patients view the courtyard through glass walls on three sides of the building. During the warmer months, both patients and their caregivers are invited to enjoy the courtyard and perhaps even receive their treatments in the outdoors. The courtyard itself is organized especially towards the Chemotherapy area. The width of each treatment station on the east wall of the chemotherapy area is delineated in the courtyard with narrow pebble bands between the paving. Each segment in the courtyard contains a different planting and layout scheme such that patients can identify their preferred treatment chair. …
