“Inspiring a Curiosity and Connectivity to Nature”
Bridgwater Forest is the latest neighbourhood development located on 330 acres of land in Waverley West, Winnipeg. Bridgwater Forest embraces “Live Happier, Live Healthier, Live Greener” principles by providing 70 acres of open space that includes 25 acres of mature forest, 4 storm water management lakes, and an array of native plantings.
Over five kilometers of trails link the community together and encourage a healthy “green” lifestyle. The trail system travels through the forest and along the lakes offering a variety of landscapes. A zero-excavation asphalt path detail was adapted for use to minimize ecological impact. As a result, the entire community can safely experience the more sensitive areas of the forest while viewing native flora and fauna in its habitat.
Nodes are strategically integrated into the trail system to maximize outdoor experiences and to encourage social interaction. Recreational nodes include a playground with pavilion, pedestrian bridge, and fountain plaza that provide the neighbourhood with different active and passive recreational opportunities. Some nodes are located near transit bus stops and mailbox kiosks to further encourage and enhance outdoor community gathering points. The node designs serve as focal points within the trail system – creating places to meet, relax, play and connect.
The consistency of material palette used for landscape elements such as signage, fence, paving, and site furniture creates a cohesive trail network meandering around restored wetlands and through remnant forests. The strategically located trail signage offers an interpretive experience of the forest and naturalized areas, building deeper understandings of sustainability and the local and regional ecology.
